The organising committee of the CX Pontevedra European Championships, together with the European Cycling Union and the authorities of the city of Pontevedra and the region of Galicia, have carried out this morning an act of planting a tree in the Illa das Esculturas circuit. In line with the environmental commitment of all the organisms, it has also served as a twinning between all the actors involved in the event.
After a tour of the Expo Zone and a walk around the Illa das Esculturas circuit, which will host tomorrow the junior, under-23 and elite races of the European Cyclo-cross Championships, the different authorities planted a narrow-leaved ash tree in the Illa das Esculturas. This tree belongs to the more continental of the two autochthonous species of ash that inhabit the Iberian Peninsula. The event is part of an action already repeated by the UEC in each of its competitions as an example of its environmental commitment.
The event was attended by Miguel Anxo Fernández Lores, mayor of Pontevedra; Rafael Domínguez Artime, vice-president of the Deputation of Pontevedra; Agustín Reguera, territorial delegate of the Xunta de Galicia; Enrico della Casa, president of the European Cycling Union; José Luis López Cerrón, president of the managing commission of the Royal Spanish Cycling Federation; Juan Carlos Muñiz, president of the Galician Cycling Federation; Delmino Pereira, president of the Portuguese Cycling Federation and vice-president of the UEC; Alejandro Martín, secretary of the RFEC; Óscar Sánchez, vice-president of the FGC; and David Carrillo, secretary of the FGC.
In addition, Juan Carlos Muñiz, president of the Galician Cycling Federation has given gifts to all the authorities present, as thanks for having made possible this European Cyclocross Championships. A small ceramic sculpture was given to the representatives of the Pontevedra City Council, the Pontevedra Provincial Council and the Xunta de Galicia, as well as to the European Cycling Union and especially to José Luis López Cerrón, in his last international act as president of the RFEC.
This afternoon, the Team Relay puts in dispute the most spectacular race of the European Cyclo-cross Championships, with the participation of the national teams of Spain, France, Czech Republic and Italy.
