The European Cycling Union visits Pontevedra, venue of the European Cyclocross Championships 2024

This Monday, the European Cycling Union (UEC) visited A Illa das Esculturas, the site that will host the 2024 European Cyclocross Championships on 1, 2 and 3 November. Last Friday, the Organising Committee was constituted to coordinate the planning of one of the most important cycling events at European level.

Last Friday, the authorities involved in the success of this event met in the City Council of Pontevedra to form the Organising Committee. A meeting chaired by Miguel Anxo Fernández Lores, mayor of the city; Rafa Domínguez, vice-president of the Pontevedra Provincial Council; Daniel Benavides, provincial head of sports of the Xunta de Galicia; and Carlos Muñiz, president of the Galician Cycling Federation.

After the constitution of the Organising Committee, this Monday a delegation of the European Cycling Union, led by its president Enrico della Casa, has toured with Carlos Muñiz, president of the Galician Cycling Federation, the spectacular environment in which the European Cyclocross Championships will be held. An area already known by all cyclocross lovers, which has hosted events of the Spanish Cup in 4 editions and the Spanish Championships in 2019 and 2020.

On the technical side, Tiziana Lardieri (events coordinator of the European Cycling Union); Jos Smets (cyclocross delegate technician of the European Cycling Union) and Berto del Río (cyclocross technician of the Galician Cycling Federation) reviewed the specific points of the circuit such as the start and finish area, obstacle zones, pit area or bridges. The objective, to polish all the details so that the circuit will be ready for next November.

After this recognition, with satisfaction and congratulations from the European Cycling Union for the spaces shown, the concept of the route and the environment, the delegation travelled to the Diputación de Pontevedra for a reception.

The President of the Provincial Council of Pontevedra, Luis López, received the delegation. In a working meeting with friendly terms and a great willingness to collaborate during the next months, also participated Luisa Sánchez, vice-president of the Pontevedra Provincial Council; Rafa Domínguez, vice-president of the Pontevedra Provincial Council; Daniel Benavides, head of the provincial sports service of the Xunta de Galicia; Enrico della Casa, president of the European Cycling Union; Alasdair MacLennan, secretary of the European Cycling Union; Alejandro Martín, secretary of the Royal Spanish Cycling Federation; Carlos Muñiz, president of the Galician Cycling Federation; David Carrillo, secretary of the Galician Cycling Federation and Delmino Pereira, president of the Portuguese Cycling Federation.

To conclude, the delegation went to the City Council of Pontevedra, where they were received by the Mayor of the city, Miguel Anxo Fernández Lores. In a cordial atmosphere and with the desire to explore technical, organisational and economic issues, the different participants in the meeting presented the lines of work and discussed issues such as the official presentation of the European CX Cyclocross Championships Pontevedra, which will take place in September.

The 2024 edition of the European Cyclocross Championships will include, in addition to the traditional elite, under-23 and junior races, both male and female, the celebration for the first time of the masters races in this European competition. In this way, the participation of cyclists will practically double in an event contested by national teams and whose current champions are Michael Vanthourenhout (Belgium) and Fem van Empel (Netherlands) in the elite category.

CX Pontevedra and the Galician Cycling Federation will continue to carry out promotional activities to ensure that the 2024 European Championships in A Boa Vila will be a sporting and attendance success.
